5 Jet Ski Maintenance Tips For Longevity And Better Utility

Jet skis are thrilling machines that provide endless fun on the water. However, like any vehicle, they require regular maintenance to ensure longevity and optimal performance. Neglecting your jet ski can lead to costly repairs and diminished utility over time.

Here are five essential tips to help you keep your jet ski in pristine condition:

    • 1. Invest in a Quality Jet Ski Cover
    • 2. Flush the Engine After Every Ride
    • 3. Regularly Check and Change the Oil
    • 4. Inspect and Clean the Jet Pump
    • 5. Store It Properly During the Off-Season

    1. Invest in a Quality Jet Ski Cover

One of the simplest yet most effective ways to extend the life of your jet ski is by investing in a high-quality cover. A cover shields your jet ski from harsh weather conditions, UV rays, dust, and debris, which can cause fading, rust, and other damage.

Opt for waterproof and UV-resistant jet ski covers that fit snugly to prevent moisture buildup and protect sensitive components. Additionally, a good cover deters pests and rodents from nesting in your jet ski during off-season storage.

    2. Flush the Engine After Every Ride

Saltwater and debris can wreak havoc on your jet ski’s engine if not cleaned out promptly. After each ride, especially in saltwater, it is essential to flush the engine with fresh water to remove corrosive elements. Most jet skis come with a built-in flushing port for this purpose.

Attach a hose, start the engine, and let the water run through for a few minutes. This process prevents salt and grime buildup, which can lead to corrosion and reduced engine efficiency over time.

    3. Regularly Check and Change the Oil

Just like any other motorized vehicle, a jet ski needs regular oil changes to keep its engine running smoothly. Over time, oil can break down and lose its lubricating properties, leading to increased friction and wear.

Check your owner’s manual for the recommended oil change intervals, usually after every 50 hours of use or at the start of each season. Use high-quality oil and replace the oil filter to ensure the engine stays properly lubricated and free from contaminants.

    4. Inspect and Clean the Jet Pump

The jet pump is a crucial component of your jet ski that generates thrust for propulsion. Debris like weeds, rocks, and fishing lines can get lodged in the pump, causing reduced performance or even damage.

After every ride, inspect the pump and remove any debris you find. If left unattended, a clogged jet pump can lead to overheating and costly repairs. Keeping the pump clean ensures optimal thrust and enhances your jet ski’s overall performance.

    5. Store It Properly During the Off-Season

Proper storage is key to maintaining your jet ski’s utility during the off-season. Start by thoroughly cleaning the exterior and flushing the engine. Next, drain the fuel or add a fuel stabilizer to prevent it from degrading.

Remove the battery and store it in a cool, dry place. Finally, use a jet ski cover to protect it from dust and moisture while in storage. Taking these steps ensures your jet ski is ready for action when the season starts.

By following these maintenance tips, you can enjoy your jet ski for years to come with minimal downtime and repairs. Treat your watercraft well, and it will reward you with countless adventures on the water.
